When the rules feel like a cage
“I am worn out from trying to be good, and I do not know what else to try.”
You are not here because you do not know the rules. You know them better than most people in the room. You have kept them for years, in public, and you are tired in a way a vacation does not fix.
These four readings do not lower the standard. The standard has never moved and nothing here will move it. What they take apart is the machinery you have been running on — reward, punishment, resolve, the private tally you keep on yourself — and why it was never going to hold.
It will cost you something to read. Week two names the way you have been motivating yourself and calls it what Scripture calls it. Week three takes away something you are quietly proud of.
What it will not give you is a better system. There is no better system. There is a different kind of heart, and it is given rather than built.
